Today was the second time that I have received a
request to bid on a wedding that seemed suspicious. This is how the scam
works: 1. Someone overseas requests
information about pricing for the photography of a wedding. They will be
coming in from out of the country. The language used in the email is a bit
strange. The details of the wedding seem to be lacking. Plus, they are in a
hurry. This is the part that doesn't make sense. A wedding is coming in from
outside of the US and they have a short amount of time to organize things.
2. The scammer tries to get the photographer to be
the clearing agent for their single check. They want the photographer to go
ahead and pay the other vendors before the client's check clears. They
promise to reward the photographer generously for taking care of paying the
other vendors.
3. One of the vendors (or the only vendor) is their
partner. The partner cashes the photographer's check before the
photographer figures out that the client's check has bounced.
Here is a sample first contact email:
Hello,
My name is MIKE CAMPBELL and i work with OSSA INC in SPAIN, am the
field manager for MADRID branch. I met Jessica my wife to be in
march last year ,she came from a royal family in GHANA and and
came to MADRID SPAIN for her university education where i met her
and we are getting married this month of MAY 2007,
Her parents insisted that we must have a traditional wedding in
GHANA and later pick a country of our choice for the church
wedding. and so we have decided to do it in AMERICA because she
has two of her cousins in UNITED STATES and she said it has always
been her dream to wed in UNITED STATES.
We need a professional photographer to help us cover the events in
AMERICA, we believe it will not make sense including a photographer to the
list of people that will be coming for our wedding in UNITED STATES.
So i want to know if you will be available to cover the wedding
which will come up on the 26th of may 2007 and also i want to know
how much i will have to deposit down so that we can be rest assure
that you will not disappoint us.
I intend paying the deposit with a cashiers check and i want you
to give me your FULL NAME just as you will want it to appear on
the check and your FULL ADDRESS is also needed because you will
receive the check by regular mail. Thanks and hope to read from you
